Why DDR-blood?
Degeneration has occurred in the Western European breeding of German shepherds. Little pigmentation, slim bone structure and soft character. This applies for the population of “hobby” dogs as well as the training dogs. For the degeneration in character, fear of biting can principally be blamed.

It is not without reason that with police- and other service dog organisations it has become more rule than exception to use “Malinoise”. A German shepherd with a strong and reliable character is just as much capable as a Malinoise, and just as much reliable too, even as a family dog. Due to strict selection measures in the former DDR, the present “Eastern dogs” nowadays still catch the eye because of their dark pigmentation, heavy bone structure and strong, stabile characters. What’s more is that these dogs usually are more healthy than Western dogs, especially where HD is concerned.

Below two real DDR classics, who are in my view close to the "perfect German Shepherd".

In the DDR there was, in contrast to us in the West, really no difference between “hobby” dogs and training dogs. The dogs taking part in the Siegershow were just as capable with bitework. This bitework however was nothing compared to our IPO. More similarities were found in the modern day KNPV program.

Of course it is not all gold that shines, but that is the same all over the world. Being a lover of good working dogs, I see it as my personal assignment to preserve the little that is left of the former DDR-elements, for future use. This way, these dogs can be used to put a stop to the dead-end of our current breeding program.

Obviously, I do not intend to drag the Western Dogs through the mud. There are some very fine dogs with very good characters in this country. A good breeder will try and combine the best qualities of both East and West. An example of such a well-succeeded combination is Ahron von Granit Rose (picture on the left).
